One of Africa's leading medical and social research centres into Aids and HIV

The Perinatal HIV Research Unit

The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU), established in 1996, is one of the largest AIDS research centres in Africa. The early research focus on prevention of mother to child transmission has expanded and PHRU now leads studies on many different aspects of HIV prevention, treatment and care including medical and social research.

PHRU is a research unit of the University of the Witwatersrand, directed by Prof Glenda Gray and Prof James McIntyre. The unit is based in Soweto, South Africa, at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, one of the world's biggest hospitals.

The Perinatal HIV Research Unit will reduce the impact of the HIV epidemic on South Africans in collaboration with the community and other key stakeholders.

This is achieved by leading innovative, high quality and relevant inter-disciplinary research in a dynamic environment, making a positive contribution to people and policy debates. This research will be conducted under the highest ethical standards and will respect the rights of people and communities.

The unit is also committed to integrity and the professional development of its employees, with an emphasis on the empowerment of disadvantaged people.

Health 4 Men

The Health4Men project was launched on the 1st March 2009. It is a program of PHRU and is aimed at men in underserved populations, including MSM and unemployed young men, and is the first large-scale program specifically geared to get HIV-related messaging to the MSM community. David Furnish from the Elton John Foundation and Zackie Achmat from TAC were at the press conference and endorsed the project.

One clinic is located in the Gay Village, in Cobern Street, Green Point. This clinic offers men free HIV tests, screening for sexually transmitted infections, and counseling. The second clinic is attached to Woodstock Hospital and offers the same services but also antiretroviral treatment.
